Overview

Of the thirty-seven books Epicurus wrote On Nature, almost none survives. What survives is the abridgement he made for followers who could not work through the whole: a letter to a student named Herodotus, compressing his physics into something a reader could carry in memory. It reaches us because Diogenes Laertius copied it out, three or more centuries later, into his Lives of the Philosophers — the accident of preservation that saved most of what we have. The letter lays out a world of atoms and void and nothing else: bodies too small to see, moving through empty space, combining and coming apart, with no gods arranging them and no purpose steering them. From that base Epicurus explains sensation, the soul, the limits of knowledge, and the possibility of countless other worlds. The point is never physics for its own sake. A person who grasps that thunder is atoms and not a god's anger, that the soul is atoms and dies when the body dies, has less left to dread; the study of nature exists to quiet the mind. This is the reasoning Lucretius would later turn into Latin verse in On the Nature of Things. Read as an epitome, it is the skeleton of a system whose full statement is gone — the fullest account of Epicurean physics in Epicurus's own words that anyone still has.

It survives because Diogenes Laertius copied it into his Lives of the Philosophers centuries later, and it is the fullest account of Epicurean physics in Epicurus's own words that remains.

What are atoms and void for Epicurus?

The two ultimate realities. Atoms are bodies too small to see and, as the name says, uncuttable, indestructible units that keep their size and shape. Void is the empty space through which they move; without it nothing could shift at all. Everything else, worlds, weather, minds, is atoms in motion through void, combining and separating. There is nothing besides these two, and both are infinite.

Why does Epicurus say nothing comes from nothing?

It is his first principle of physics. If things could arise from nothing, anything could come from anything, with no need of seeds or causes, which we never observe; and if things perished into nothing, all would long since have vanished. So the sum of matter is uncreated and eternal. From this conservation principle Epicurus argues that the universe as a whole had no beginning and will have no end.

What does the Letter say about the soul?

That the soul is bodily, made of especially fine, fast atoms spread through the frame, the cause of sensation. Because it is a physical mixture bound up with the body, it disperses when the body dies and feels nothing thereafter. This materialist account is not idle: it is the ground of Epicurus's claim that death is nothing to us, since where there is no soul there is no one left to be harmed.

How did the Letter survive if On Nature was lost?

Epicurus wrote thirty-seven books On Nature, of which almost nothing remains. This letter was his own abridgement of that system, made portable on purpose. It reaches us because Diogenes Laertius, three or more centuries after Epicurus, transcribed it whole into his biography. Much of what we have of Epicurus survives by that same accident of quotation, and Lucretius later turned the same reasoning into Latin verse.

A world of atoms and empty space

What is everything made of, if you strip out the gods and the purposes? Epicurus answers with two things only: uncuttable bodies and the void they move through.

Everything is atoms and void and nothing else. Bodies too small to see move through empty space, combining and coming apart; nothing comes from nothing and nothing is destroyed into nothing, so the sum of things is eternal and unmade. The atoms are infinite in number, the void infinite in extent, and from this Epicurus draws countless worlds beside our own. No gods arrange the mixture and no purpose steers it. It is the abridged skeleton of a physics whose full statement, the thirty-seven books On Nature, is lost, condensed here so a student could carry it in memory.

Physics in the service of calm

Why should a person care what thunder or the soul is made of? Because, Epicurus argues, knowing removes the dread, and quieting the mind is the whole point of the study.

Epicurus never studies nature for its own sake. The senses are the standard of truth, and from them he explains perception as thin films streaming off objects and the soul as fine atoms dispersed through the body. Two conclusions do the real work: the soul is material and dies with the body, and celestial events are natural, not the anger of gods. A person who grasps that thunder is atoms and not a divine threat, and that death ends all sensation, has less left to fear. The physics exists to reach that calm, ataraxia, freeing the mind from terror of the heavens and of dying.
