The Missing Mechanism in Natural Selection
Can chance variations assemble the interdependent changes that complex organisms require, or must inheritance carry the effects of use and disuse? The answer decides more than a biological theory: it supports or threatens Spencer’s accounts of mind and social evolution.
In two 1886 essays, Spencer argued that natural selection could not assemble co-adapted parts such as bones, muscles, nerves and blood vessels, because each had to change together. He revived Lamarck’s claim that acquired modifications pass to descendants, making inheritance the causal engine of adaptation, psychology and sociology. August Weismann opposed him through four exchanges in 1893 and 1894, arguing that germ plasm remained insulated from the body. Biology followed Weismann.
